Personality:
Brilliant at being a social butterfly, Danica is extremely good at getting exactly what it is she wants, when she wants. She grew up in extreme poverty and now that she's older and has the opportunity, Danica now has a taste for the finer things in life - both for the reputation it gives her, and because of the simple fact that when she was young, she had none of it. A champagne taste on her lovers wallet, Danica schmoozed with the best of the best, the most elite, the most dangerous. Talented at smooth talking and getting her way, Danica wasn't just a gold-digger- she was a plant for the Resistance, feeding secrets and key information directly to her cause.
She clothes herself in only the highest, top dollar brands available. Preferring stilettos to workable sneakers, expensive and difficult to obtain perfumes, Danica fills her closet with synthetic lambs wool coats, and sunglasses etched with designer scrawl. Not only does dressing the part make her feel like a person again, it also gets her into far more difficult to reach places -- government dinners, balls, private parties where Facility members lurk, places where locations of laboratories happened to slip out in tipsy conversation.
She has an innate stubbornness that sticks with her wherever she goes, and even down in the murkiest, most disgusting parts of the Misfit camp, Danica can still be found sporting high dollar attire. Her argument is that she needs these things for her cover, for her job, but in reality it's because she doesn't want to feel like garbage any longer. Too long, as a young child, did she receive hand me downs in trash bags that made her small wardrobe fill with the stink of plastic. A blatant refusal to bedeck herself in smart, sensible clothing still sticks with her, to this day.
Danica has learned the hard way that the world is do or die -- eat, before you get eaten. She's blunt, to the point, and doesn't sugar coat things for her friends or her sister. She's loyal, but usually only as long as it directly benefits herself, or her sister. The only time this loyalty is challenged is when it comes to Anna's dominating force clashing with Danica's hard headed personality. She defaults to the Resistance leader, but if her sister were in danger, she would drop everything and run to Eva's side, no matter the danger to herself.
This attitude often put her at odds with Anna, since Anna wholeheartedly dedicated herself to the cause and could not understand why Danica would jeopardize everything for the sake of Eva. The Resistance was everything to Anna, while to Danica, it was simply a means to survive, and a way to keep herself and Eva alive.
Danica was trusted both the most and least by Anna, and despite Anna's reservations about her friend, she was utilized as one of their most valuable assets when it came to rescuing incarcerated Misfits. This gave Danica a sense of self worth, and when she wasn't on the inside smuggling Misfits out, she was working her way through New Manhattan's upper elite.
There is a difference, Danica says, between being used and being a user. One makes you an easy target, the other makes you a predator in wait. Danica is a deeply manipulative person when need be, and does whatever she has to in order to get things done. She has to sleep with a government official in order to get proper documents for herself and her sister? Fine. She has to continue doing so to fund college and land herself a job right in the midst of his office, where the Facility comes and goes as it pleases? Right, done. Danica can be cold, calculating and downright cruel -- but only when the situation calls for it.
On the surface, she portrays herself as classy and elegant but very considerate and courteous. This isn't a façade, for the most part -- but when she desires something, she's not afraid to put the front on or lay it on thick -- whatever the case may be. Her sister has learned to see through Danica's many disguises, and knows when the cold act is just an act -- and also when Danica is being deadly serious. Danica's temper, when pushed, can be extremely violent and dangerous.
Despite her tendency to be rather brutal, Danica deeply cares about her sister and would do anything, give anything to ensure her safety. Throughout her time serving under the Misfit cause, they cooperate and work together, Eva feeding her information and Danica ferrying it back to the Resistance.
Background:
Born in 2045, Danica was raised in a very, very low class home right smack in the middle of ghetto New Detroit. The inner city was incredibly dangerous, and most that were able either lived in high rises or on the outskirts, in newly created suburbs dug out by the government as a 'improvement' project. The city was still very much suffering from post war trauma despite having grown considerably since the rebirth of New America underground, and Danica, her family, and people like her felt the worst of it.
Because they were so poor and living in such destitute conditions, approval for children was not given for most in Danica's section of the woods. Children were unregistered and birth was generally done in living rooms with inadequate equipment. Such is the case with the Kirwinn sisters -- Danica's mother, despite attempts at birth control and following regulation, gave birth first to Danica herself, then to Eva seven years later. Unfortunately, because of the lack of medical equipment and proper sanitation, their mother died young, leaving their father to handle both an infant and a very bitter and angry seven year old Danica.
Danica's bitterness towards Eva didn't last, however -- the small baby girl grew on the seven year old and became the equivalent to a human barnacle -- wherever Danica went, so did Eva. Their father didn't really know what to do with two young girls, so it was mostly left to Danica to take care of things like cooking, cleaning, changing Eva, and so on. Their father helped when he could, but mostly he worked all day and into the night in order to bring home enough money for the three of them to even think about surviving. Times were hard, but the small, broken little family of three took care of each other as best as they knew how.
Besides being below poverty level, childhood was fairly uneventful; she was sent to the local inner city school where no one asked any questions and all the teachers were volunteers. The government looked the other way because the kids were getting an education, and they didn't want to send any of their employees in to deal with the mess of inner city kids. Most dropped out before high school, especially once the classes got 'harder' and a little more was required. Danica insisted on both herself and Eva going - when her sister was of age - because she highly valued education, knowing that it was the only way to get anywhere in the world as they knew it.
High school brought more troubled times, though it was hardly a new experience. Danica and Eva continued going to school, and both worked furiously to obtain high grades, since they viewed that as their only way out.
Danica graduated top of her class -- though it wasn't saying a lot when you only had a senior class of about twenty. Still, it meant something to her father, and on the day of her graduation he presented her with a small, dented locket that contained both his picture, and their deceased mothers.
After high school, Danica started to search for a way to go to college. Going to any kind of university required not only buckets of money, but verification that you were a legal citizen and not a child born without approval, and you weren't a Misfit. Danica didn't have a lot of cash, and she definitely wasn't 'legal' as far as the approval system for rearing children went. Whereas being a Misfit was concerned, Danica had thus far shown none of the telltale signs, and therefore assumed that she was clean.
So, in order to secure future success for both herself and her sister, she manipulated a local government official into falsifying documentation for both herself and her sister. With his stamp of approval, it was indisputable fact that both Kirwinn sisters were legal, approved, and had a clean bill of health in regards to the tainted blood of the Misfits. Of course, this came with a price, and Danica grew used to answering the mans late night phone calls both prior to and after receiving the documents. A certain sort of 'fondness' had blossomed between herself and this official - in a way that one might be fond of the family pet -, but unfortunately for him, it was one sided and only a business transaction and Danica had to much to do with herself to get bogged down by a relationship. To Danica, no price was too steep in securing Eva's future, so she shouldered it with little to no effort, and continued to bribe the official into funding her college.
In January of 2063, Danica enrolled in college to begin studying for a degree in biology. She did well in her classes, though in 2065 at the age of twenty, Danica first began showing signs of becoming a Misfit.
Violent night terrors seized the woman and she often found herself hiding in darkened alleyways outside the school, shivering in cold sweats from the dreams that plagued her. Fevers coursed through her body and right there in that cold alley in late November, Danica ‘teleported’ for the first time. She reappeared back in her room, much to her absolute horror. Danica, terrified beyond her wildest dreams, ran.
Her feet took her downwards into the hot, humid sewers of New Detroit where she had heard rumors of other Misfits gathering. Along the way, she met a young woman almost exactly her age named Anna, and they became extremely close friends.
In the following years, Danica’s abilities were sharpened by both rigorous training and age, and she became crucial in the Resistance’s efforts. One of Anna and Jack’s most valuable assistants, Danica used her ability to teleport people in and out of different labs in attempts to free imprisoned Misfits. This went on for five years until one day, Anna was caught.
For the following year, Danica and Jack, along with a myriad of other Misfits, attempted to free Anna. Danica’s teleportation abilities were ebbed by Facility safeguards – she was unable to teleport through steel, they found, and therefore most labs in the area outfitted themselves with steel reinforcements – and she was therefore unable to simply teleport in, grab Anna, and leave.
Arguments in the Misfit camp became heated – the loss of life in attempts to rescue Anna were great, and fewer and fewer were volunteering in missions to attempt Anna’s freedom.
Abilities:
Teleportation a la Nightcrawler. When she appears and disappears, it's always with a cloud of back smoke, and a lingering hint of her perfume.
Her limiters are as follows:
*She must know the area she is teleporting to
*She can only teleport five times within a two hour period. If she overtaxes herself, she can fall ill from dehydration, exhaustion, and overexertion.
*When teleporting with others, they must be firmly held, otherwise the risk of leaving pieces of them behind is high. Teleporting others also reduces the number of times she can teleport without succumbing to exhaustion.
